In the Treta Yuga, there was a very selfish demon. To achieve his selfish goals, he started worshiping Lord Shiva every day. The demon would bring ashes from the cremation ground daily, apply them to his forehead, and worship Lord Shiva by placing them on his idol. Due to this, he came to be known as Bhasmasur.
Lord Shiva, the compassionate and all-knowing, ignored the evil intentions in the demon's mind and appeared before him, saying, "Ask for any boon, and it shall be granted." The demon said, "Lord, grant me a boon that anyone whose head I touch with my hand turns into ashes." Shiva, allowing the demon to ask for something better, said, "You have the chance to ask for a greater and more benevolent boon. Think carefully." However, the demon insisted on his initial request.
Lord Shiva granted the boon, saying, "So be it." Delighted with his newfound rare power, Bhasmasur set out to destroy the gods. The gods became anxious, and a meeting was convened to decide what to do. Sage Narad suggested, "Let me use my wisdom to temporarily stop Bhasmasur." Bhasmasur advanced towards the divine realm.
Just as Bhasmasur started his approach, Sage Narad intercepted him and said, "Hey fool! Where did you come up with the idea from Shiva's words? How can he grant you a boon that turns anyone into ashes by a mere touch?" Doubt crept into the demon's mind upon hearing Sage Narad's words. He approached Shiva with hesitation and asked, "Lord, did you genuinely grant me the boon, or did you say it just to keep me satisfied?" Shiva replied, "No, I indeed gave you the boon you asked for."
After pondering for a while, Bhasmasur said, "In that case, let me test the boon by placing my hand on your head first." Despite Shiva's attempts to reason with him, the wicked demon insisted on testing his newfound power. Lord Shiva, instead of punishing him, ran away to demonstrate the truth of the granted boon.
Vishnu did not witness Shiva's state because wherever Shiva went, Bhasmasur followed to test his power. Vishnu, respecting Shiva's boon, could not harm Bhasmasur directly. Therefore, he took the form of Mohini, a mesmerizing dancer, to captivate the demon. Bhasmasur, enchanted by Mohini's dance, imitated her by placing his hand on his head. Instantly, flames erupted from his body, and in a matter of moments, he turned into ashes.

Treta Yuga mein ek atyant swaarthi asur tha. Apne swaarth ko poora karne ke liye usne roz Shiv ki upaasna shuru ki. Asur roz shamshaan se bhasm laakar apne maathe par lagata aur Shiv ki murti ko chadhakar pujan karta. Is karan uska naam Bhasmasur pad gaya.
Bhagwan Shiv, udar aur sarvagya hone ke bawajood, asur ke man mein chaleesha badhi niyat ka koi dhyan nahi diya aur uske saamne aakar bola, "Mang koi bhi var, vo tere liye siddh hoga." Asur ne kaha, "Prabhu, mujhe aisa varad dijiye ki jiski sir par main haath rakhunga, vo bhasm ho jaaye." Shiv ne asur ko behtar varad maangne ka avasar diya, kehte hue, "Tumhe aur bhi bada aur accha varad maangne ka avasar mila hai. Dhyan se socho." Lekin asur ne apne mool varad par hi insist kiya.
Bhagwan Shiv ne kaha, "Tathastu." Khushi se bharpoor, Bhasmasur devtaon ka sarvanash karne nikla. Devta chintit ho gaye, aur baithak bulaai gayi ki kya karein ya na karein. Devarshi Narad ne kaha, "Main apni buddhi ka istemaal karke thodi der ke liye Bhasmasur ko rokta hoon." Bhasmasur devlok ki or badhne laga.

Narad ki baaton se asur ke mann mein shanka ho gayi. Vo Shiva ke paas gaya aur poocha, "Prabhu, kya aapne sach mein mujhe yeh varad diya hai ya bas mere man ko shaant karne ke liye kaha?" Shiv ne jawab diya, "Nahi nahi, aisi baat nahi hai. Maine tumhe wahi var diya hai jo tumne maanga." Is par Bhasmasur ne kaha, "To phir main to pehle aapke hi sir par haath rakhkar var ki pariksha loonga." Shivji ne use samjhaaya-bujhaaya, lekin durachari asur ne Shivji ki ek bhi baat nahi suni.
