Chapter 4
Chanchula’s Redemption
The time had finally come when the attractions of the world began to fade from Chanchula’s heart. The very life she had once believed would bring her happiness now stirred an unease within her, constantly reminding her of the choices she had made and the consequences of her past.
After listening to the sacred story of the Shiva Purana, a profound sense of detachment had awakened within her.
Her heart, once drawn towards worldly desires, now turned steadily towards Lord Shiva. She carried a deep remorse for the mistakes of her past, and a firm resolve had taken root within her: whatever remained of her life would be devoted to Shiva, to devotion, and to the purification of her soul.
In the sacred land of Gokarna, she came into the company of a great Brahmin devotee of Lord Shiva. Seeing the transformation within her, he understood the depth of her remorse. He regarded the detachment that had arisen in her heart as a sign of Lord Shiva’s grace.
Chanchula now longed to hear the Shiva Purana in its entirety.
She began living in the service of the Brahmin.
The restlessness that had once defined her was gone. The things of the world no longer held any attraction for her. Her mind gradually found peace in the stories of Shiva, in devotion, and in contemplation of the self.
When the time came, the Brahmin began to narrate the Shiva Purana to her in detail.
The sacred narration continued day after day.
The glory of Lord Shiva, His divine nature, the path of devotion, the wisdom of the Self, and the beauty of renunciation drew Chanchula deeper and deeper within herself. The remorse that had once weighed heavily upon her heart slowly began to transform into devotion.
She no longer looked upon her past merely as a source of sorrow and guilt. She began to see it as a lesson—a painful lesson, but one that had awakened her to the truth of her own existence.
She came to understand that no matter how far a person may have fallen, if genuine remorse arises within the heart, along with a sincere desire to change, even a life steeped in darkness can turn towards liberation.
Chanchula transformed her life completely.
Every day, she bathed in the sacred waters of the holy pilgrimage site. She began covering her body with sacred ash. The beauty of her form was no longer adorned by worldly ornaments. Instead, rudraksha beads and the austerity of her spiritual practice became her adornment.
She took to wearing matted locks and garments of bark.
Her life became one of profound discipline.
She kept strict control over her speech.
Her food became simple and restrained.
Most of her time was spent chanting the name of Lord Shiva and meditating upon Him.
Following the path shown to her by her guru, she began contemplating the divine form of Lord Shiva with unwavering devotion.
Slowly, the turmoil within her disappeared.
The same mind that had once been restless with worldly desires now became a place where the image of Shiva remained firmly established.
Her spiritual practice was no longer confined to outward discipline. She began contemplating constantly upon Shiva’s eternal nature—the divine consciousness, bliss, and truth that lay beyond the changing world.
Days passed.
Months passed.
Then years passed.
Yet Chanchula’s devotion never weakened.
Within her, devotion, wisdom, and detachment continued to grow together.
She was no longer afraid of the final stage of life.
For an ordinary person, death is often a source of fear. But for Chanchula, death had become a passage—a sacred journey that would carry her to the feet of Lord Shiva.
When her allotted time on earth came to an end, her body was released peacefully.
There was neither terror nor agony in her final moments.
Her passing was as serene as that of a traveller who, after completing a long and difficult journey, finally returns home.
At that very moment, a celestial chariot appeared, sent by Lord Shiva.
It was a wondrous sight. Divine attendants of Shiva stood upon it, while an otherworldly radiance surrounded the entire chariot.
Chanchula ascended it.
She carried with her none of the burden of her former sins.
Her soul had been purified through repentance, devotion, and spiritual discipline.
The divine attendants of Lord Shiva carried her towards Shivapuri.
As the celestial chariot journeyed towards the divine realm, Chanchula’s form itself began to change. Her earthly appearance faded away, and she emerged in a radiant divine form, adorned with celestial ornaments.
There was nothing left within her but devotion and bliss.
Before long, she arrived in Shivapuri.
There, she beheld the magnificent divine form of Lord Mahadeva.
The attendants of Shiva surrounded Him. Ganesha, Nandi, Bhringi, Veerabhadra, and countless other divine beings stood in His service. The gods themselves were engaged in worshipping the great Lord.
The radiance of Shiva was like the light of millions of suns.
His throat was deep blue.
The glory of His many divine manifestations illuminated the realm around Him.
A crescent moon rested upon His matted locks.
Sacred ash adorned His body, and His divine form embodied a sublime union of yoga, renunciation, compassion, and infinite grace.
Chanchula stood before that magnificent vision of Lord Shiva.
A joy arose within her that no worldly possession could ever have given her.
Tears of bliss filled her eyes.
Her entire body trembled with divine emotion.
With deep reverence, she bowed her head at the feet of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati looked upon her with infinite compassion.
There was not even the slightest trace of judgment in their gaze.
The sins of Chanchula’s former life no longer stood before her.
Her repentance, her devotion, and her years of spiritual practice had made her worthy of Shiva’s grace.
Goddess Parvati welcomed her to her side.
The same Chanchula who had once known sorrow and fallen into the darkness of worldly life had now become a beloved companion of Goddess Parvati.
Her journey was complete.
She was granted an eternal place in Shivapuri.
There, she found a bliss that would never fade.
She no longer feared birth or death.
There was no worldly attachment left within her, nor any burden of sin.
There was only the eternal presence of Lord Shiva.
The story of Chanchula reminds us that no matter how dark a person’s present life may appear, genuine repentance, the sacred hearing of Shiva’s teachings, devotion, and spiritual discipline can change the direction of an entire life.
The woman who had once been bound by the desires of the world ultimately reached Shivapuri and became a beloved companion of Goddess Parvati.
Her downfall did not become the final definition of her life.
Her return did.
And the path of that return was the sacred story of Shiva, renunciation, and devotion.
