Once, the sage Sankadik Muni and others, (in a child form) went to meet Lord Hari Narayana in Vaikuntha. However, they were stopped by the doorkeepers of Lord Hari Narayana, whose names were Jaya and Vijaya. The sages tried to convince the doorkeepers to let them enter, but they did not agree. Then, the sages blew a conch in such a way that it forced Lord Hari Narayana to come out himself.

When Lord Hari Narayana learned about the insolence of Jaya and Vijaya, he cursed them to be expelled from Vaikuntha. Now, Jaya and Vijaya had two options: either stay away from Lord Hari Narayana for seven lifetimes or take birth as the fierce enemies of Lord Hari Narayana for three lifetimes. Upon their death at the hands of Lord Hari Narayana, they could return to Vaikuntha. Jaya and Vijaya, not able to stay away from Lord Hari Narayana for long, accepted to be born as his fierce enemies for three lifetimes.
In this way, Jaya and Vijaya took their first birth as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Lord Hari took the form of Varaha and Narasimha to kill them in their respective births. Their second birth was as Ravana and Kumbhakarna, who were killed in the Ramayana by Lord Rama. The third birth was as Shishupala and Dantavakra, who were slain by Lord Krishna during his incarnation as Krishna. After both brothers attained liberation, they returned to the abode of Lord Hari Narayana.
