During the time of Mahabharata, there was a highly enlightened and virtuous sage named Rishi Mandavya. Rishi Mandavya had led a life free from any sinful actions, and as a result, he was preparing for liberation. However, one day, while his disciples were digging the ground to plant saplings in his ashram, a large amount of gold started emerging from the ashram's soil.
When this news reached the king, he mistakenly perceived Rishi Mandavya as a dacoit and arrested him. The king ordered Rishi Mandavya to be publicly executed by hanging. However, no matter how many times the executioner attempted to hang him, Rishi Mandavya remained alive. Realizing his mistake, the king then humbly begged for forgiveness, grasping Rishi Mandavya's feet.
Despite the king's apologies, Rishi Mandavya, feeling indignant, went to Yamaraj (the god of death) to inquire why he, who had committed no sins in his life, had to face such humiliation. Yamaraj then showed Rishi Mandavya a moment from his childhood when he had unknowingly pierced a beetle with a thorn while playing. According to the laws of karma, this minor act of causing harm to a living being was deemed a sin. However, Rishi Mandavya argued that a child of twelve lacks the knowledge of good and evil, and therefore, he should not be held accountable for such actions.
Angry at the injustice, Rishi Mandavya cursed Yamaraj that he would be born as a servant in a lowly household. Over time, Yamaraj was indeed born as Vidura, a wise and just figure during the Dvapara Yuga. Vidura's teachings on ethics and morality became well-known throughout the world, fulfilling the consequences of Rishi Mandavya's curse.
Moral of the story: A person should never commit sinful actions; otherwise, they have to face the consequences of that sin either in this life or in the next one.
