Goddess Savitri considered the mother of all Vedas, is mentioned in Puranic tales as the first deity worshipped by Lord Brahma himself. According to the Devi Purana, after Brahma's worship, all Brahmins and sages began to venerate Goddess Savitri. We are now going to narrate a tale associated with Goddess Savitri from those Vedas.
A long time ago in the Madra kingdom, there was a great and virtuous king named Ashwapati. His queen, Malti, was equally virtuous, and both were known for their benevolence and righteous deeds. Unfortunately, they had no children, prompting them to undertake penance in Pushkar to seek progeny. It was during this time that the sage Parashara, by good fortune, appeared before them. The sage enlightened the king and queen about the greatness of the Gayatri Mantra, giving it to them for chanting. Additionally, he advised them to perform the Trikala Sandhya (rituals performed at dawn, noon, and dusk). Following Parashara's instructions, when the king and queen began chanting the Gayatri Mantra, Goddess Savitri appeared before them, granting the boon of offspring.
Under the blessings of Goddess Savitri, a daughter was born to the king and queen, named Savitri. In the same kingdom lived a poor woodcutter named Satyavan, known for his honesty and virtuous nature despite his impoverished circumstances. As Savitri grew older, she fell in love with Satyavan for his virtues rather than his outward beauty.
Aware that Satyavan was a poor woodcutter, King Ashwapati opposed their union, fearing for his daughter's future. However, Savitri, having accepted Satyavan as her husband, remained steadfast in her commitment, valuing duty, and love over material wealth. Despite attempts to dissuade her, Savitri married Satyavan, and they lived in the humble dwelling of the woodcutter.
One fateful day, while Satyavan was cutting wood, a tree fell, causing his untimely death. Yamaraj, the god of death, arrived to take Satyavan's soul. Undeterred, Savitri followed Yamaraj, pleading for her husband's life. Yamaraj explained the inevitability of death, but Savitri, with her determination, asked for two boons - the first, the restoration of sight to her in-laws, and the second, the blessing of abundant wealth for them.
Impressed by Savitri's wisdom, Yamaraj granted her the boons and continued his journey. However, Savitri persisted, following him. Intrigued, Yamaraj questioned her actions, to which Savitri replied that without her husband, wealth and prosperity would be meaningless. Eventually, moved by her devotion and intelligence, Yamaraj revived Satyavan and granted the couple his blessings, allowing them to live a prosperous life together.
This tale exemplifies the unwavering devotion and determination of Savitri in the face of adversities, earning her divine blessings and the reunion with her beloved Satyavan.

Unhī Vedon kī Devi Savitri se judī ek kathā āj ham yahān batāne jā rahe hai. Aaj se bahut samay pahle Madra deś mein Ashvapati nām ke ek bade hi mahān aur pratāpī rājā huye. Maharānī Mālatī unki dharm patnī thi. Rājā-rānī dono hī dayāvān aur dharm-karma karne vāle vyakti the.

Devi Savitri ke āśīrvaad se rājā-rānī ke yahān ek bachchī kā janm huā jiskā nām Savitri rakhā gayā. Usi rājy mein Satyavān nām kā ek garīb lakḍahārā yuvak bhi rahtā thā jo lakḍiyāṁ kāṭkar apnā aur apne garīb andhe mātā-pitā kā jīvan chalāyā kartā thā.
Satyavān dekhe me jitnā adhik sundar thā usse kahīn adhik uska charitra aur acche svabhāv wāla yuvak bhī thā. Nām ke anurūp hī sadā satya bolne vālā Satyavān garīb hote huve bhī hameshā dharm-karma kartā rahatā thā. Rājā Ashvapati kī putrī Savitri jab badi huī to use usi yuvak Satyavān se prem ho gayā. Satyavān ko patā thā ki vah ek garīb lakḍahārā hai isliye rājā Ashvapati kabhī use svīkār nahīn karenge.
Lekin phir bhī Savitri ne apne kadam pīche nahīn liye. Kyonki ab vo dharm, karma aur vachan se Satyavān ko apnā pati mān chukī thī. Satyavān bhī Savitri ke sacche prem ko asvīkār nahīn kar sakā aur usne bhī Savitri ke prem ko svīkār kar liyā. Jab rājā Ashvapati ko ye bāt patā calī to unhone apane putrī ko bahut samjhāyā ki vo ek garīb lakḍahāre se vivāh na kare. Lekin Savitri ne Satyavān ko pati mān liya thā.

Lekin jab Yamarāj Satyavān kī sūkṣma śarīr ko apne sāth le jāne lagte hain to Savitri bhī Yamarāj ke pīche- pīche jāne lagatī hai.
