Gayasur got his name because he loved cows since childhood, and he used to graze them as well. From childhood, the name of Vishnu was in Gayasur's heart. Gayasur did not like demonic things; he wanted to attain the divine. Therefore, Gayasur went to the Kolahal mountain and started intense penance and meditation on God. To please Brahma, Gayasur held his breath for thousands of years. No other demon had undertaken such severe penance. Pleased with Gayasur's penance, all the gods and goddesses had to come to him. When Vishnu asked Gayasur why he was performing such severe penance and what he wanted to achieve through it, Gayasur, in a devotional state, asked Vishnu for a unique boon.
Gayasur said, "Lord, my wish is to be holier than all the gods, Brahmins, rituals, pilgrimages, sages, mantras, and yogis." All the deities granted this boon to Gayasur. In this way, the devotee king Gayasur became so holy that anyone who saw him once would be liberated from all sins. Following Vishnu's command, Brahma went to Gayasur. However, Brahma could not figure out how to take Gayasur's massive body to Vishnu. Brahma sought help from Lord Shiva. Shiva suggested a solution. After that, Brahma went to Gayasur and said, 'I need to perform a very special ritual, but there is no place holier than your body in the entire universe. Therefore, I need your body for this sacrifice.' Gayasur thanked Lord Vishnu and lay down on the Kolahal mountain with his massive body. Brahmins and sages from all corners of the world came to participate in the ritual. A grand sacrifice took place that day. All the deities came and sat on Gayasur's body. When the sacrifice started, Gayasur's body began to shake from the fire. At the desire of Gayasur, Vishnu also came there, and Gayasur became peaceful. Today, the Gaya where we go to attain salvation is made from Gayasur's body, where the abode of all deities is."
