When the Lord Ganesha, cursed the moon.
Once upon a time, the god of wealth, Kubera, built a new kingdom called Alakapuri. After the construction of Alakapuri, Kubera became extremely arrogant, thinking that he was all-powerful. He believed that no one could leave his kingdom unsatisfied or empty-handed. Kubera distributed food and wealth to workers and scholars, but only in a manner befitting beggars.
When Sage Narada informed Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati about this change in Kubera's behavior, they simply smiled. Kubera, wanting to invite them for a feast, thought it prudent to first invite Lord Shiva's family. Worried that Lord Shiva might get angry if the arrangements were not up to the mark, Kubera decided to invite them first.
After making all the arrangements, Kubera humbly invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for a feast. However, when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, for some reason, expressed their inability to attend, Kubera thought of inviting Ganesha instead. Kubera hesitated, thinking that Ganesha might only be going there to sniff around and eat very little due to his small size.
Though Ganesha had sensed Kubera's thoughts, he silently went with him to Alakapuri. When Ganesha started eating, Kubera was astonished to see Ganesha consume fruits, then laddoos, and finally, the entire feast in the dining hall. Despite all efforts, Ganesha's hunger remained unfulfilled, and Kubera's frustration grew.
When Kubera tried to arrange food from other kingdoms, Ganesha agreed to eat, and Kubera, warning him about his limited resources, pleaded with him to satisfy his hunger quickly. However, even after eating everything, Ganesha's hunger persisted. In frustration, Kubera offered his entire wealth, including Alakapuri, to Ganesha.
Ganesha accepted Kubera's wealth, including Alakapuri, to satisfy his hunger. Although Ganesha had eaten a lot, his stomach seemed to protrude even more. Seeing Ganesha hold his stomach, the moon deity Chandra couldn't control his laughter. Ganesha, angered by this disrespect, cursed Chandra that his brilliance and radiance would diminish.
As a result, Chandra began to fade, and his connection with the ocean caused the tides to rise. The Earth experienced floods, and Chandra, distressed, sought forgiveness from Ganesha. While Ganesha forgave Chandra, he made it clear that the curse couldn't be fully revoked. Henceforth, Chandra would wane for a day and then regain his full form for fifteen days, resulting in the lunar phases. The curse transformed into a blessing, shaping the phenomenon known as the full moon.

Story:
Ek samay ki baat hai, dhan ke devta Kubera ne ek naye rajya Alakapuri ka nirmaan kiya. Alakapuri ka nirmaan hone ke baad, Kubera ko apne aap par bahut ghamand ho gaya ki vo har prakar se sarvasamriddh hai. Use lagne laga ki ab koi bhi vyakti uske yahan se atyant santusht hokar ya khali haath laut jaaye. Kubera ne bhavan-shramikon aur panditon ko diya, lekin bhikharion ke samaan kuchh matra mein.
Jab Rishi Narada ne is badlav ke baare mein Mahadev aur Devi Parvati ko bataya, toh ve bas muskurane lage. Kubera, unhe bhojan ke liye bulaane ka iraada banata hai, lekin vichar karta hai ki pahle unhe bulana chahiye taaki unki vyavastha thik ho jaaye. Mahadev ko gussa aane ki sthiti mein Kubera ne decide kiya ki sabse pehle Mahadev parivaar ko bhojan ke liye bulayenge.
Sabhi vyavasthaayein karne ke baad Kubera, bhojan nimantran ke liye Mahadev aur Mata Parvati ke saamne pahunch gaya. Lekin jab Mahadev aur Mata Parvati, kisi karan se, nimantran ko asvikaar karne ka izhaar kar diya, toh Kubera ne socha ki unhe pahle hi bulana chahiye.
Sabhi vyavasthaayein karne ke baad Kubera, bhojan nimantran ke liye Mahadev aur Mata Parvati ke saamne pahunch gaya.
Lekin Ganesha ka pet aur bhi adhik bahar aane laga. Chandra devta, Ganesha ke pet ko dekhte hue haste hue bole. Ganesha, is adar ka anadar dekhkar, Chandra ko shraap diya ki uski chamak aur tejas kam ho jayenge.
Is par Chandra fade hone laga, aur uski samudrik sambandh se saharshit tides utpann hone lagi. Prithvi ko badh lagti hai, aur Chandra vyathit ho, Ganesha se kshama maangta hai. Ganesha ne Chandra ko maaf kar diya, lekin spasht kar diya ki shraap poori tarah nahi hat sakta. Aage se, Chandra ek din ghata hoga aur phir pandrah dinon ke andar apne poori roop mein lautega, jo humein purnima aur amavasya ke roop mein dikhata hai. Shraap ne vardaan mein badal gaya, jise hum poornima ke roop mein jaante hain.
