Long ago, in Goloka, there lived a Gopi named Tulsi. She was a devoted and sincere devotee of Lord Vishnu, worshipping him with a pure heart. Tulsi always appeared directly in front of Lord Krishna, wanting to see her beloved deity. Similarly, Sudama, like Tulsi, was a Gopi devoted to Krishna, willing to sacrifice himself for the Lord.
Tulsi and Sudama always stayed near Krishna to have the privilege of witnessing and worshipping their beloved deity. However, due to their intense love and devotion, Radha became upset and, in anger, expelled both Tulsi and Sudama from Goloka, casting a curse upon them.
As a result of Radha's curse, Tulsi took birth as the daughter of King Dharmadhwaja in Bharatvarsha, while Sudama was reborn as the demon Shanka Chood. Shanka Chood was a powerful demon who had won many battles and possessed various mystical powers. His notable feature was that he appeared not as a demon but as a handsome prince-warrior.
Once, King Dharmadhwaja's daughter, Tulsi, fell in love with Shanka Chood after seeing him. Despite Shanka Chood revealing his demonic identity, Tulsi's love for him remained unwavering. Although King Dharmadhwaja opposed their union, they eventually married in a Gandharva ceremony, and Tulsi went to live with the demon.
During this time, the mighty demon Shanka Chood received a boon from Lord Brahma, making him invincible in battle. He consistently defeated the gods, causing distress among them. Seeking a solution, the gods approached Lord Vishnu, who explained the curse given by Radha and suggested that only Mahadev (Shiva) could defeat Shanka Chood.
Upon praying to Vishnu, Mahadev, and Shiva, the gods were granted a trident to be used in defeating Shanka Chood. However, Shiva expressed his inability to kill the demon due to Tulsi's unwavering devotion to her husband. Vishnu then revealed the secret that Shanka Chood was his devotee in a previous life, and he couldn't be killed by anyone but Mahadev.
Upon hearing this, the gods pleaded with Mahadev to use the trident against Shanka Chood for the welfare of the universe. However, Mahadev emphasized Tulsi's commitment to pativrat dharma (devotion to her husband) and refused to harm Shanka Chood. Vishnu intervened and suggested breaking Tulsi's devotion to Shanka Chood to make him vulnerable.
Vishnu transformed himself into the appearance of Shanka Chood and approached Tulsi, breaking her devotion and ending the demon's invincibility. Eventually, during a battle, Shanka Chood was defeated, and upon learning the truth, Tulsi cursed Vishnu to become a stone (Shaligram) and Shiva not to be worshipped with Tulsi leaves, reserving them only for Vishnu.
Understanding Tulsi's sorrow, Vishnu consoled her, explaining the greater good achieved through their sacrifices. He granted her the boon that her body would become the sacred river Gandaki, and her hair would transform into Tulsi plants used for divine worship. Vishnu also pledged to reside on the banks of the Gandaki as the Shaligram stone.
In this way, the curse and subsequent events established the worship of Vishnu as the Shaligram and highlighted Tulsi's significance in divine rituals.

Tab Vishnu, Mahadev ko ye rahasya bataate hain ki agar Tulsi ka satitva bhang ho jaye toh us daanav pati ka ant kiya ja sakta hai. Jagat kalyan ke liye ye zaroori bhi tha. Isi karan Vishnu ne chhal ka sahara liya aur apna roop Tulsi ke daanav pati Shanka Chood ke roop mein badal kar uski pativrat dharma ko bhang kar diya. Iske baad Bhagwan Shankar ke saath yuddh ke dauran Shanka Chood ko mara gaya.
