१. बेताल की कथा
महर्षि सुदर्शनदेव ने अपने शिष्यों को बताया कि बेताल की कथा केवल
किसी पिशाच की कथा नहीं है। यह एक ऐसे शिवगण की कथा है जिसकी शिवभक्ति अतुलनीय थी।
कैलाश पर भगवान शिव के असंख्य गणों में वह गण सदैव प्रभु शिव की सेवा में तत्पर रहता
था। उसके प्रत्येक श्वास में 'ॐ नमः शिवाय' का जप था। किन्तु उसकी भक्ति में एक गंभीर दोष था। जब भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती
साथ विराजमान होते, वह केवल भगवान शिव की परिक्रमा करता और माता पार्वती की उपस्थिति
की उपेक्षा कर देता। अन्य गण उसे समझाते कि शिव और शक्ति एक-दूसरे से अलग नहीं हैं,
पर वह उनकी बात नहीं मानता।
एक दिन माता पार्वती का धैर्य समाप्त हो गया। उन्होंने उसे रोककर
कहा कि भक्ति केवल श्रद्धा नहीं, ज्ञान से भी पूर्ण होती है। जिसने शिव को स्वीकार
किया लेकिन शक्ति का अपमान किया, वह सच्चा भक्त नहीं, अज्ञान का दास है। उसके अहंकार
के कारण माता ने उसे श्राप दिया कि वह कैलाश छोड़कर मृत्युलोक के एक निर्जन वन में
शिशु रूप में जन्म लेगा और भूत-पिशाचों के बीच रहेगा। उसकी मुक्ति तभी होगी जब वह पूर्ण
ज्ञान और सिद्धि प्राप्त कर लेगा।
श्राप के साथ कैलाश दिव्य प्रकाश से काँप उठा। वह शिवगण ज्योति बनकर
कैलाश से विलीन हो गया। कालचक्र घूमने के बाद उसका जन्म एक घने और रहस्यमय वन में नवजात
शिशु के रूप में हुआ। उसके पास न माता थी, न पिता। तभी प्रकृति ने उसे अपना सहारा दिया।
२. मादा चमगादड़ की गोद में पला
बालक
उसी वन में रहने वाली एक विशाल मादा चमगादड़ ने उस दिव्य शिशु को
अपने पंखों में छिपाकर पाला। उसने उसे अपने ही बच्चे की तरह दूध पिलाया, संकटों से
बचाया और उड़ने की विद्या सिखाई। इस प्रकार उसके भीतर दो संसारों का संगम हुआ—एक ओर
शिवगण की दिव्य शक्ति और दूसरी ओर वन्य जीवन से मिली स्वच्छंदता।
जैसे-जैसे उसकी आयु बढ़ी, दस महाविद्याओं की सिद्धियाँ उसके भीतर
स्वतः जागृत होती गईं। मादा चमगादड़ के संरक्षण के कारण उसे आकाश में उड़ने की अद्भुत
शक्ति भी प्राप्त हुई। जब उसकी सिद्धियाँ पूर्ण हुईं, तब उसने ज्ञान और विद्या की खोज
में पृथ्वी का भ्रमण किया। वह पर्वतों के ऊपर से उड़ता, महासागरों को पार करता, जंगलों,
मरुभूमियों, आश्रमों और राजाओं के नगरों के ऊपर से गुजरता।
वह केवल यात्री नहीं था—वह समय का साक्षी था। उसने मनुष्य के भीतर
देवत्व और दानवत्व, करुणा और क्रूरता, त्याग और विश्वासघात—दोनों को देखा। तभी उसने
निश्चय किया कि यदि मनुष्य स्वयं को नहीं समझ पाता, तो वह उसकी कथा लिखेगा।
३. महान कथाकार और परमार वंश
का अदृश्य गुरु
वह एक प्राचीन वटवृक्ष की सबसे ऊँची शाखा पर बैठकर संसार की घटनाओं
को कथाओं में ढालने लगा। राजाओं, संतों, वीरों, पापियों, प्रेम, युद्ध, छल, त्याग,
धर्म और अधर्म—कुछ भी उसकी लेखनी से नहीं बचता था। कहते हैं, उसने इतनी कथाएँ लिखीं
कि कोई मनुष्य जीवनभर पढ़ता रहे तो भी वे समाप्त न हों।
उज्जयिनी उसे अत्यंत प्रिय थी। वह रात्रि में आकाशमार्ग से उस नगरी
का भ्रमण करता। महाकाल के मंदिर की आरती, क्षिप्रा के तट पर जलते दीप और शिवभक्ति में
लीन परमार वंश के राजाओं ने उसके हृदय को बाँध लिया। धीरे-धीरे उसने देखा कि परमार
राजा केवल राज्य नहीं चलाते थे; वे धर्म और अपनी मातृभूमि की रक्षा के लिए भी लड़ते
थे।
एक रात्रि आदिशक्ति पार्वती उसके सामने प्रकट हुईं। उन्होंने कहा
कि अब बेताल ज्ञान और सिद्धि प्राप्त कर चुका है और कैलाश लौट सकता है। बेताल ने विनम्रता
से कहा कि वह पहले शिवभक्त परमार वंश के राजाओं की सहायता करना चाहता है और उनका गुरु
तथा मार्गदर्शक बनना चाहता है।
माता पार्वती ने उसकी इच्छा स्वीकार कर ली और उसे शिवभक्त परमार
वंश का अदृश्य संरक्षक नियुक्त किया। उस दिन से बेताल केवल उनका रक्षक नहीं रहा—वह
उनका अदृश्य गुरु बन गया। वह राजाओं को बिना परीक्षा दिए अपनी नौ दिव्य शक्तियाँ नहीं
देता था। पहले वह उनके साहस, धैर्य, बुद्धि, धर्म और त्याग की परीक्षा लेता; योग्य
सिद्ध होने पर ही उन्हें दिव्य शक्तियाँ प्रदान करता।
४. बेताल का बूढ़ा रूप
युगों के बीतने के साथ पिशाचराज बेताल बेताल वन के विशाल और प्राचीन
वटवृक्ष पर रहने लगा। वह असंख्य सिद्धियों का स्वामी और अनगिनत कथाओं का रचयिता था।
उसकी सबसे प्रिय जगह उसी वटवृक्ष की ऊँची शाखा थी, जहाँ वह संसार को देखता, उसके रहस्यों
को समझता और उन्हें अमर कथाओं का रूप देता।
उसका रूप पहली दृष्टि में भयावह था—अग्नि जैसी दमकती आँखें, लंबे
बिखरे केश, विशाल शरीर और रहस्यमयी हँसी। किन्तु उस भयावह रूप के भीतर एक महान विद्वान,
कथाकार और युगों का मौन इतिहासकार बसता था।
कभी-कभी वह हजारों वर्षों तक गहरी नींद में सोया रहता। उसका शरीर
लगभग आठ फीट ऊँचा बताया गया है। उसका रंग बर्फ की तरह धवल था और घुटनों तक लटकते सफेद
केश चाँदनी की तरह चमकते थे। उसके खर्राटों की गूँज इतनी प्रबल थी कि रात के सन्नाटे
में कई कोस दूर उज्जयिनी तक सुनाई देती थी।
उज्जयिनी के लोग उसे जागते हुए लगभग कभी नहीं देख पाए थे। इसलिए
उसके बारे में अनेक किंवदंतियाँ थीं। कोई उसे दयालु और महाज्ञानी मानता, तो कोई उसे
भयानक राक्षस समझता। लेकिन सत्य यह था कि बेताल अपने वन का न्यायप्रिय संरक्षक था और
बिना कारण किसी मनुष्य को कष्ट देना अधर्म मानता था।
५. बेताल के दूसरे स्वरूप का
रहस्य
बहुत कम लोग जानते थे कि पिशाचराज बेताल के दो स्वरूप हैं। पहला
था उसका आदि और अत्यंत प्राचीन रूप—आदिम बूढ़ा बेताल। दूसरा था उसका सबसे चंचल, रहस्यमय
और अप्रत्याशित रूप—बाल बेताल। यह रहस्य परमार वंश के कुछ चुनिंदा लोगों के अतिरिक्त
लगभग सभी से छिपा रहा।
महर्षि सुदर्शनदेव ने बताया कि बेताल के इन दो स्वरूपों के पीछे
एक ऐसी घटना थी जिसे केवल सुनना पर्याप्त नहीं था। उन्होंने अपने दिव्य कमंडल के जल
में अतीत की घटनाएँ दिखाईं और बेताल के दूसरे रूप की पूरी कथा सामने आई।
६. बाल बेताल — वन का शरारती
बालक
दिव्य दृश्य में एक लगभग बारह वर्ष का बालक दिखाई दिया। वह बेताल
वन के एक विशाल वटवृक्ष की शाखा से उल्टा लटका हुआ था और अपनी शरारत के कारण स्वयं
को छुड़ाने की कोशिश कर रहा था। वन के जीव उसे देखकर आश्चर्य कर रहे थे। तभी एक भयानक
काला अजगर उसकी ओर बढ़ा। बालक डर गया और अपनी माँ को पुकारने लगा—'माँ! मुझे बचाओ!'
अगले ही क्षण आकाश से एक विशाल मादा चमगादड़ बिजली की गति से नीचे
उतरी। उसने बालक को अपने पंजों में सुरक्षित पकड़ा और आकाश में उड़ गई। सुरक्षित स्थान
पर पहुँचकर उसने बालक को डाँटा कि उसकी अनुमति के बिना गुफा से बाहर क्यों निकला। बालक
ने मासूमियत से कहा कि वह वन की दुनिया देखना चाहता था।
मादा चमगादड़ का क्रोध पिघल गया। उसने स्वयं उसे पूरे बेताल वन का
भ्रमण कराया और फिर कहा कि अब वह अकेले गुफा से बाहर नहीं निकलेगा। जब तक उसकी आयु
अठारह वर्ष की नहीं हो जाती, उसे इस नियम का पालन करना होगा। बाल बेताल ने अपनी माँ
को वचन दिया कि वह अठारह वर्ष से पहले अकेले बाहर नहीं आएगा।
७. माँ की प्रतीक्षा और बाल बेताल
की बेचैनी
बाल बेताल ने कुछ समय तक अपनी माँ की आज्ञा का पालन किया। बाद में,
वह पंद्रह वर्ष का किशोर हो चुका था और तीन वर्षों तक गुफा से बाहर नहीं निकला। उसकी
माँ जब भी भोजन की खोज में जाती, वह गुफा के भीतर उसकी प्रतीक्षा करता।
लेकिन एक दिन उसकी पालनहार माता भोजन की खोज में वन से बाहर गईं
और फिर वापस नहीं लौटीं। दिन बीते, फिर महीने और ऋतुएँ बदल गईं, किन्तु माँ नहीं लौटी।
बाल बेताल हर दिन गुफा के द्वार पर बैठकर उसी दिशा में देखता, जिधर उसकी माँ गई थी।
अंततः उसने प्रतीक्षा छोड़कर अपनी माँ को खोजने का निश्चय किया।
उसने गुफा में अपनी माँ के विश्राम करने की जगह को छुआ और कहा कि यदि वह लौटे और उसे
वहाँ न पाए, तो समझ जाए कि वह उसे खोजने निकल गया है। इसके बाद उसने पहली बार अपनी
प्रतिज्ञा तोड़ी और गुफा से बाहर निकल आया।
वह पूरे वन में अपनी माँ को खोजने लगा। पहाड़ियों, गुफाओं, झरनों
और ऊँची शाखाओं के बीच वह लगातार पुकारता—'माँ!' लेकिन उसे केवल अपनी ही आवाज़ की प्रतिध्वनि
सुनाई देती।
८. 'मैं बड़ा कैसे बनूँ?'
एक दिन उसने आकाश में उड़ते पक्षियों को देखा और अपनी माँ की बात
याद की कि अठारह वर्ष की आयु से पहले उसे उड़ने की विद्या नहीं मिलेगी। उसके मन में
विचार आया कि यदि वह जल्दी बड़ा हो जाए तो उड़कर संसार के किसी भी कोने में जाकर अपनी
माँ को खोज सकता है। यही विचार धीरे-धीरे उसकी बेचैनी और फिर सनक में बदल गया।
अब वह वन के प्रत्येक जीव से एक ही प्रश्न पूछने लगा—'बताओ, बड़ा
कैसे हुआ जाता है?' जब कोई उत्तर नहीं दे पाता, तो वह उसे बाँस और बेलों से बने अपने
बड़े पिटारे में बंद कर देता। सर्प, बिच्छू, नेवले, छिपकलियाँ और छोटे वन्य जीव उससे
बचने के लिए अपने निवास छोड़ने लगे। बाल बेताल उन्हें मारना नहीं चाहता था; वह केवल
अपनी माँ तक पहुँचने का उपाय जानना चाहता था। किन्तु उसकी बालसुलभ जिद पूरे वन के लिए
भय का कारण बन गई।
९. महर्षि दुर्वासा का आगमन
उसी समय बेताल वन के उत्तरी भाग में महर्षि दुर्वासा तपस्या करने
आए। वन के भयभीत जीवों में से एक नाग ने उन्हें बताया कि एक विचित्र बालक उन्हें पकड़कर
अपने पिटारे में बंद कर देता है और बार-बार पूछता है कि वह बड़ा कैसे हो सकता है। दुर्वासा
ने बालक को समझाने का निश्चय किया।
कुछ दिनों बाद बाल बेताल ने महर्षि दुर्वासा को तपस्या में लीन देखा।
उसे लगा कि यदि संसार में किसी को बड़ा होने का रहस्य पता होगा, तो वह इसी महान ऋषि
को अवश्य पता होगा। वह उनके पास गया और बार-बार पूछने लगा—'ऋषिवर, मैं जल्दी बड़ा कैसे
हो सकता हूँ? मुझे अपनी माँ को ढूँढ़ना है।'
महर्षि समाधि में मौन रहे। बाल बेताल अधीर हो गया। उसने अपने पिटारे
से विषैले सर्प और बिच्छू निकाले और उन्हें ऋषि की जटाओं और कंधों पर छोड़ दिया। लेकिन
अद्भुत रूप से वे सर्प और बिच्छू ऋषि के शरीर का स्पर्श करते ही दिव्य पुष्पों में
बदल गए।
१०. श्राप
महर्षि दुर्वासा की आँखें खुलीं और उनका क्रोध प्रज्वलित हो उठा।
उन्होंने बाल बेताल से पूछा कि क्या उसने उन जीवों के परिवारों और उनकी पीड़ा के बारे
में कभी सोचा था। बालक ने पहली बार समझा कि उसकी जिद से दूसरों को कष्ट हुआ था। उसने
कहा कि उसका उद्देश्य केवल अपनी माँ को ढूँढ़ना था और यदि वह बड़ा हो जाता, तो उड़कर
उसे खोज सकता था।
किन्तु उस समय महर्षि का क्रोध चरम पर था। उन्होंने कहा कि अज्ञान
भी जब दूसरों के लिए कष्ट का कारण बन जाए, तो अपराध बन जाता है। उन्होंने बाल बेताल
को श्राप दिया—'आज के बाद तुम कभी बड़े नहीं हो सकोगे। तुम जीवन भर इसी बाल रूप में
इस वन में भटकते रहोगे।'
उसी समय विशाल मादा चमगादड़ वहाँ पहुँची और अपने पुत्र के लिए क्षमा
माँगने लगी। उसने बताया कि वह भोजन की खोज में बहुत दूर चली गई थी और परिस्थितियों
के कारण लौट नहीं सकी। उसका पुत्र लंबे समय तक उसकी प्रतीक्षा करता रहा और अंततः उसे
खोजने निकल पड़ा। उसने यह भी कहा कि उसके पुत्र के मन में किसी के प्रति द्वेष नहीं
था; उसकी भूल केवल अपनी माँ से मिलने की व्याकुलता और अधीरता थी।
११. देववाणी और नियति
मादा चमगादड़ के आँसुओं और महर्षि के पश्चाताप से भरे क्षण में आकाश
से दिव्य प्रकाश उतरा। एक सर्वव्यापी देववाणी हुई कि यह बालक सामान्य नहीं है। उसकी
नियति शिवभक्त परमार वंश से जुड़ी है और भविष्य में उसे उसी वंश के महानतम सम्राट विक्रमादित्य
का मार्गदर्शक, परीक्षक और सहायक बनना है। इसलिए महर्षि से अपने श्राप का ऐसा परिमार्जन
करने को कहा गया जिससे उनका वचन भी अक्षुण्ण रहे और नियति का विधान भी पूरा हो।
१२. दो स्वरूपों का जन्म
महर्षि दुर्वासा ने स्पष्ट किया कि वे अपना श्राप वापस नहीं ले सकते,
क्योंकि ऋषि के मुख से निकला वचन ब्रह्मवाक्य होता है। लेकिन वे उस श्राप का परिमार्जन
कर सकते हैं। उन्होंने कमंडल के पवित्र जल पर वैदिक मंत्रों का उच्चारण किया और बाल
बेताल के मस्तक पर हाथ रखा।
उन्होंने कहा कि अब से बेताल कभी पूरी तरह बड़ा नहीं हो सकेगा, लेकिन
सदैव बालक भी नहीं रहेगा। उसके दो स्वरूप होंगे। जब कृष्ण पक्ष की अमावस्या निकट आएगी
और अंधकार अपनी चरम सीमा पर होगा, तब वह अपने प्रथम स्वरूप—आदिम बेताल—में परिवर्तित
होगा। उस समय उसका शरीर अत्यंत विशाल और वृद्ध होगा; उसके भीतर अगाध ज्ञान और असंख्य
सिद्धियाँ होंगी और उसकी आँखों में युगों का अनुभव दिखाई देगा।
किन्तु जैसे ही शुक्ल पक्ष का चंद्र उदित होगा और पूर्णिमा की चाँदनी
पृथ्वी पर बिखरेगी, वह फिर उसी निष्कपट, चंचल और बालसुलभ रूप—बाल बेताल—में लौट आएगा।
उसका हृदय सदैव निर्मल रहेगा और उसकी सरलता कभी समाप्त नहीं होगी। यही दोनों स्वरूप
जीवनभर उसके साथ रहेंगे।
मंत्रों और पवित्र जल के प्रभाव से बाल बेताल के शरीर के दो प्रतिबिंब
एक क्षण के लिए दिखाई दिए—एक मासूम, हँसमुख बालक और दूसरा लंबी जटाओं वाला, विशालकाय,
अग्नि समान नेत्रों वाला अत्यंत प्राचीन बेताल। दोनों रूप कुछ क्षण साथ दिखाई दिए और
फिर एक ही शरीर में समा गए।
१३. बेताल और विक्रम की नियति
महर्षि दुर्वासा ने बाल बेताल से कहा कि उसका जीवन अब साधारण नहीं
रहा। एक दिन समय स्वयं उसे उज्जयिनी ले जाएगा, जहाँ उसकी भेंट उस बालक से होगी जो आगे
चलकर सम्राट विक्रमादित्य कहलाएगा। वह विक्रम का स्वामी नहीं होगा और न विक्रम उसका
सेवक। दोनों एक-दूसरे की नियति बनेंगे।
यही वह रहस्य था जिसके कारण पिशाचराज बेताल के दो स्वरूप संसार से
छिपे रहे—एक आदिम, प्राचीन, ज्ञानी और सिद्धियों से सम्पन्न बूढ़ा बेताल; दूसरा निष्कपट,
चंचल और शरारती बाल बेताल। एक ही सत्ता के ये दोनों रूप आगे चलकर विक्रम और बेताल की
उस अद्भुत जोड़ी का आधार बनने वाले थे जिसकी कथा समय स्वयं इतिहास में लिखने वाला था।

The Story of Baal Betal
1. The Legend of Betal
Maharishi
Sudarshandev told his disciples that the story of Betal was not merely the tale
of a ghost or spirit. It was the story of a Shiva Gana whose devotion to Lord
Shiva was unparalleled.
Among the
countless Ganas of Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash, this Gana was always devoted to
serving his Lord. With every breath, he chanted, “Om Namah Shivaya.” Yet
there was a serious flaw in his devotion. Whenever Lord Shiva and Goddess
Parvati sat together, he would circumambulate only Lord Shiva, completely
ignoring the presence of Goddess Parvati.
The other Ganas
tried to explain to him that Shiva and Shakti could never be separated, but he
refused to listen.
One day,
Goddess Parvati's patience finally ran out. She stopped him and said that
devotion must be accompanied not only by faith but also by wisdom. One who
accepts Shiva but disrespects Shakti cannot be called a true devotee; he is
merely a slave to his own ignorance.
Because of his
arrogance, Goddess Parvati cursed him. He would have to leave Mount Kailash and
be born as a child in a desolate forest of the mortal world, where he would
live among ghosts and spirits. He would be freed from the curse only after
attaining complete knowledge and spiritual powers.
As the curse
was pronounced, Mount Kailash trembled with divine light. The Shiva Gana
transformed into a radiant light and vanished from Kailash.
After the wheel
of time turned, he was born as a newborn child in a dense and mysterious
forest. He had neither mother nor father. Yet nature itself came forward to
become his protector.
2. The Child Raised by a Mother Bat
In that very
forest lived a gigantic female bat. She found the divine infant, sheltered him
beneath her wings and raised him as her own. She fed him, protected him from
danger and taught him the secrets of flight.
Thus, two
worlds came together within him—on one side, the divine power of a Shiva Gana;
on the other, the wild freedom he inherited from the forest.
As he grew
older, the powers of the Ten Mahavidyas began awakening within him
naturally. Because of the protection of the mother bat, he also gained the
extraordinary ability to fly through the sky.
Once his
spiritual powers became complete, he travelled across the earth in search of
knowledge and wisdom. He flew over mountains, crossed oceans and passed above
forests, deserts, hermitages and the cities of kings.
He was not
merely a traveller—he was a witness to time.
He saw both
divinity and evil within human beings, compassion and cruelty, sacrifice and
betrayal. And then he made a decision: if human beings could not understand
themselves, he would tell their stories.
3. The Great Storyteller and the Invisible Guru of the
Parmar Dynasty
He began
transforming the events of the world into stories while sitting upon the
highest branch of an ancient banyan tree.
Kings, saints,
warriors, sinners, love, war, deception, sacrifice, righteousness and
evil—nothing escaped his writing.
It was said
that he wrote so many stories that even if a human being spent an entire
lifetime reading them, they would never come to an end.
Ujjayini was
especially dear to him.
At night, he
would travel through the sky and visit the city. The evening prayers at the
Mahakal Temple, the lamps glowing along the banks of the Kshipra River, and the
Parmar kings devoted to Lord Shiva gradually captured his heart.
Over time, he
realised that the Parmar kings did not merely rule a kingdom; they also fought
to protect their faith and their motherland.
One night,
Goddess Adishakti Parvati appeared before him.
She told him
that Betal had now attained knowledge and spiritual powers and could return to
Mount Kailash.
But Betal
humbly replied that before returning, he wanted to help the Shiva-devoted kings
of the Parmar dynasty. He wished to become their teacher and guide.
Goddess Parvati
accepted his wish and appointed him as the invisible guardian of the
Shiva-devoted Parmar dynasty.
From that day
onward, Betal was more than their protector—he became their invisible guru.
He never
granted his nine divine powers to a king without testing him first. He tested
their courage, patience, intelligence, righteousness and capacity for
sacrifice. Only those who proved themselves worthy were granted the divine
powers.
4. The Old Form of Betal
As the ages
passed, the Vampire King Betal came to live upon the enormous ancient banyan
tree in Betal Forest.
He possessed
countless supernatural powers and was the creator of innumerable stories. His
favourite place remained the highest branch of that banyan tree, where he
watched the world, understood its mysteries and transformed them into immortal
tales.
At first sight,
his appearance was terrifying—eyes that glowed like fire, long tangled hair, a
gigantic body and a mysterious laugh.
Yet within that
frightening form lived a great scholar, storyteller and silent historian of the
ages.
At times, he
would sleep for thousands of years. He was said to be nearly eight feet tall.
His skin was white as snow, while his long white hair fell all the way to his
knees and shone like moonlight.
The sound of
his snores was so powerful that, in the silence of the night, they could be
heard several miles away in Ujjayini.
The people of
Ujjayini almost never saw him awake. As a result, countless legends grew around
him.
Some believed
him to be kind and immensely wise, while others considered him a terrifying
demon.
But the truth
was that Betal was the just protector of his forest, and he considered it
against dharma to harm any human being without reason.
5. The Mystery of Betal's Second Form
Very few people
knew that the Vampire King Betal had two forms.
The first was
his original and extremely ancient form—the Primordial Old Betal.
The second was
his most playful, mysterious and unpredictable form—the Baal Betal.
Apart from a
select few members of the Parmar dynasty, almost everyone was unaware of this
secret.
Maharishi
Sudarshandev explained that there was an extraordinary event behind Betal's two
forms—an event that could not simply be heard; it had to be witnessed.
He showed the
events of the past in the sacred water of his divine kamandalu, revealing the
complete story of Betal's second form.
6. Baal Betal — The Mischievous Child of the Forest
In the divine
vision, a boy of about twelve years of age appeared.
He was hanging
upside down from a branch of a gigantic banyan tree in Betal Forest, trying to
free himself after getting into trouble through his own mischief.
The creatures
of the forest watched him in astonishment.
Suddenly, a
terrifying black python began moving towards him.
The boy became
frightened and cried out,
“Mother! Save
me!”
The very next
moment, a gigantic female bat swooped down from the sky at lightning speed. She
caught the boy safely in her claws and flew away with him.
Once they
reached a safe place, she scolded him.
Why had he left
the cave without her permission?
The boy
innocently replied that he wanted to see the world outside the forest.
The mother's
anger slowly melted away.
She personally
took him around the entire Betal Forest and then warned him that he must never
leave the cave alone again.
Until he turned
eighteen, he would have to follow this rule.
Baal Betal
promised his mother that he would not venture outside alone before the age of
eighteen.
7. Waiting for His Mother
For some time,
Baal Betal obeyed his mother's command.
Later, he
turned fifteen. For three years, he had not stepped outside the cave.
Whenever his
mother went out in search of food, he would remain inside the cave and wait for
her.
But one day,
his foster mother went deep into the forest in search of food—and never
returned.
Days passed.
Then months
went by. Seasons changed.
But his mother
did not return.
Every day, Baal
Betal sat at the entrance of the cave, staring in the direction in which she
had disappeared.
Finally, he
stopped waiting and decided to search for her himself.
He touched the place
inside the cave where his mother used to rest and said that if she returned and
found him missing, she should understand that he had gone looking for her.
Then, for the
first time, he broke his promise and stepped out of the cave.
He searched the
entire forest for his mother.
Across hills,
caves, waterfalls and the highest branches of trees, he kept calling,
“Mother!”
But all he
heard was the echo of his own voice.
8. “How Can I Grow Up?”
One day, he saw
birds flying across the sky.
He remembered
his mother's words: he would not be taught the art of flying until he turned
eighteen.
A thought
entered his mind.
If he could
somehow grow up quickly, he could fly to every corner of the world and search
for his mother.
Slowly, this
thought turned into restlessness—and then into an obsession.
He began asking
every creature in the forest the same question:
“Tell me, how
can I grow up?”
Whenever a
creature could not answer him, he would lock it inside a large cage made of
bamboo and vines.
Snakes,
scorpions, mongooses, lizards and other small creatures began abandoning their
homes to escape him.
Baal Betal did
not want to kill them.
He only wanted
to discover a way to find his mother.
But his
childish determination became a source of fear throughout the forest.
9. The Arrival of Maharishi Durvasa
At that very
time, Maharishi Durvasa arrived in the northern part of Betal Forest to perform
penance.
One of the
frightened creatures, a serpent, told him about the strange boy who kept
capturing animals and locking them inside his cage.
The boy
repeatedly asked them how he could grow up.
Maharishi
Durvasa decided to speak to the child and make him understand his mistake.
A few days
later, Baal Betal saw Maharishi Durvasa deep in meditation.
He thought that
if anyone in the world knew the secret of growing up, it must surely be this
great sage.
He approached
the sage and repeatedly asked,
“Revered Sage,
how can I grow up quickly? I have to find my mother.”
Maharishi
Durvasa remained silent in meditation.
Baal Betal
became impatient.
He opened his
cage and took out poisonous snakes and scorpions, placing them upon the sage's
matted hair and shoulders.
But something
miraculous happened.
The moment the
snakes and scorpions touched the sage's body, they transformed into divine
flowers.
10. The Curse
Maharishi
Durvasa opened his eyes, and his anger burst into flames.
He asked Baal
Betal whether he had ever thought about the families of those creatures or the
suffering he had caused them.
For the first
time, the boy realised that his stubbornness had caused pain to others.
He explained
that his only intention had been to find his mother. If he could grow up, he
would be able to fly and search for her.
But by then,
the sage's anger had reached its peak.
He declared
that ignorance, too, becomes a crime when it becomes a source of suffering for
others.
Maharishi
Durvasa cursed Baal Betal:
“From this day
onward, you shall never grow older. You will wander through this forest in this
childlike form for the rest of your life.”
At that very
moment, the gigantic female bat arrived and begged the sage to forgive her son.
She explained
that she had travelled very far in search of food and had been unable to return
because of circumstances beyond her control.
Her son had
waited for her for a long time and had eventually gone out to search for her.
She also told
the sage that her son had no hatred towards anyone.
His only
mistake had been his desperate longing and impatience to find his mother.
11. The Divine Voice and Destiny
As the mother
bat wept and the sage was overcome with remorse, a divine light descended from
the sky.
A celestial
voice filled the forest.
It declared
that the boy was no ordinary child.
His destiny was
connected to the Shiva-devoted Parmar dynasty.
In the future,
he was destined to become the guide, tester and companion of the greatest
emperor of that dynasty—Vikramaditya.
Therefore, the
divine voice instructed the sage to modify his curse in such a way that his
words would remain true while the destiny of the child would also be fulfilled.
12. The Birth of Two Forms
Maharishi
Durvasa made it clear that he could not completely withdraw his curse because a
sage's spoken word was equivalent to a divine decree.
But he could
modify the curse.
He chanted
Vedic mantras over the sacred water in his kamandalu and placed his hand upon
Baal Betal's head.
He declared:
“From this
moment onward, Betal will never be able to become completely grown, but neither
will he remain a child forever.
“When the dark
fortnight approaches its new-moon night and darkness reaches its greatest
intensity, he will transform into his first form—the Primordial Betal.
“At that time,
his body will become enormous and ancient. Within him will reside immeasurable
knowledge and countless supernatural powers, while his eyes will reflect the
experience of countless ages.
“But as the
waxing moon rises and the light of the full moon spreads across the earth, he
will return to his innocent, playful and childlike form—the Baal Betal.
“His heart will
always remain pure, and his innocence will never disappear.
“These two
forms will remain with him throughout his life.”
Under the
influence of the mantras and sacred water, two reflections of Baal Betal's body
appeared for a brief moment.
One was an
innocent, smiling child.
The other was a
gigantic and extremely ancient Betal with long matted hair and eyes that burned
like fire.
Both forms
remained visible together for a few moments before merging back into a single
body.
13. The Destiny of Betal and Vikram
Maharishi
Durvasa told Baal Betal that his life was no longer ordinary.
One day, time
itself would take him to Ujjayini, where he would meet the boy who would one
day become Emperor Vikramaditya.
Betal would not
be Vikram's master, nor would Vikram be his servant.
The two would
become each other's destiny.
This was the
secret behind the two forms of the Vampire King Betal that remained hidden from
the world:
One was the Primordial,
ancient and wise Old Betal, endowed with immense knowledge and countless
supernatural powers.
The other was
the innocent, playful and mischievous Baal Betal.
These two forms
of the same being would eventually become the foundation of the extraordinary
bond between Vikram and Betal—a legendary pair whose story time itself would
one day write into history.
