Shivpuran story: Chapter 3
Chanchula’s Renunciation
Near the sea stood a village called Bashkal.
The village was not known for its religious spirit. Instead, it had become notorious for the conduct of its people. Many who lived there had long since strayed from the path of righteousness. Discipline and virtue had gradually disappeared from their lives.
The people were deeply immersed in worldly pleasures. Farming and trade occupied their days, but violence, deceit, greed and selfishness had also become part of their way of life. Words such as dharma, knowledge and renunciation belonged to the world of scriptures, not to their daily existence.
Among the villagers lived a Brahmin named Bindug.
Though born into a Brahmin family, Bindug had turned completely away from the path of righteousness. His mind was consumed by sinful deeds and sensual pleasures. He had no interest in his daily religious duties, ritual bathing, evening prayers or any form of spiritual discipline.
His wife, Chanchula, was a woman of extraordinary beauty and virtue. She respected dharma and sincerely tried to preserve the dignity and sanctity of their married life.
But Bindug's heart no longer belonged to his wife.
He began frequenting prostitutes. Gradually, he became immersed in the company of corrupt people and surrendered himself completely to his desires.
For a long time, Chanchula endured her husband's misconduct in silence.
She still had faith in dharma, and she did not wish to abandon the responsibilities of marriage. Despite her husband's immoral ways, she tried to remain disciplined and faithful to her own principles.
But no one can live for long in a corrupt environment without being affected by it.
Day after day, Bindug's sinful conduct slowly weakened Chanchula's resolve.
The woman who had once followed the path of righteousness began, little by little, to lose her way.
Before long, husband and wife were both consumed by sensual desires and immoral conduct. The precious years of their lives slipped away in this manner.
Time waits for no one.
Then, one day, Bindug died.
After death, the consequences of his deeds awaited him.
He was condemned to suffer terrible torments in the realms of hell. Even after enduring prolonged and unimaginable suffering, his sins were not exhausted. Because of the remaining consequences of his past actions, he was eventually reborn as a pishacha, a malevolent spirit, in the Vindhya Mountains.
There, he wandered as a terrifying creature, bound to a miserable existence.
Meanwhile, Chanchula continued to live in the same house with her sons.
Even after her husband's death, however, her life did not truly change. She remained entangled in the habits, attachments and desires of her former existence.
But destiny had another path prepared for her.
One day, during an auspicious sacred festival, Chanchula travelled with her relatives to the holy region of Gokarna.
There, she bathed in the sacred waters alongside other pilgrims and visited several temples scattered throughout the holy land.
During this pilgrimage, she entered a temple where a learned Brahmin was narrating a sacred account of Lord Shiva.
A large gathering of devotees sat listening in silence.
Chanchula quietly took her place among them.
The narration of the Shiva Purana continued.
The Brahmin spoke of human actions, sin and the consequences that inevitably follow. He described the suffering of those who become lost in worldly pleasures and the torments that may await them after death.
As Chanchula listened, something within her began to tremble.
Memories of her past suddenly came rushing back.
She remembered her husband.
She remembered her own actions.
She remembered the days when she had abandoned the path of righteousness and surrendered herself to worldly desires.
Actions she had once considered ordinary now appeared before her in an entirely different light—terrifying and unforgiving.
Her heart began to tremble with fear.
For the first time, she felt a profound sense of remorse for the life she had lived.
She suddenly understood how fleeting worldly pleasures truly were.
The body, beauty and pleasures that people chase as though they might last forever are all destined to fade.
Wealth disappears.
Beauty fades.
Relationships change.
And the body itself must one day surrender to death.
But karma does not abandon a person.
The realisation shook Chanchula to the very depths of her soul.
Even after the narration of the Shiva Purana came to an end, she could not bring herself to leave the temple.
She remained seated, lost in thought, confronting the truth of her own life.
A deep sense of vairagya—detachment from worldly existence—began to awaken within her.
The pleasures she had once pursued no longer held any attraction. She could now see how much of her precious life had been wasted chasing them.
The woman whose mind had once been surrounded by worldly desires was now terrified by the consequences of her actions.
Tears of remorse began to flow from her eyes.
For the first time, she understood that she had squandered the most precious years of her life in ignorance. By turning away from dharma, she had walked herself onto a path that could lead only towards suffering and sorrow.
Now she had only one desire.
She wanted to change her life.
She wanted to seek refuge in Lord Shiva.
And for the first time, she understood a profound truth: no matter how far a person may have strayed, if genuine remorse awakens within the heart and one sincerely strives to return to the path of righteousness, the possibility of transformation always remains.
Chanchula's heart had turned towards devotion to Shiva.
She resolved to leave her former life behind.
This was not merely the effect of having listened to a sacred story.
It was the birth of an entirely new life within her.
Until that moment, she had been bound by the attractions of the material world. Now her heart was being drawn towards the Supreme Power she had glimpsed through the sacred narration of Shiva's glory.
The lamp of renunciation had been lit within her.
She had begun to understand that the true purpose of life was not merely the pursuit of pleasure.
Human birth was not given simply for worldly enjoyment. A person's actions, conduct and inner state ultimately determine the direction of their future.
Chanchula accepted the mistakes of her past.
Her heart overflowed with remorse.
And from that very remorse, her devotion to Shiva was born.
Once, under the influence of her husband's immoral life, she too had fallen towards the path of degradation.
Now, through the power of the Shiva Purana, she had begun to turn away from the world and move towards the path of liberation.
Her life became a testament to a profound truth:
Sometimes, a moment arrives when the darkness within a person's heart suddenly breaks apart.
And that single moment can change the course of an entire life.
For Chanchula, that moment came when she heard the sacred narration of the Shiva Purana.
From that day onward, a new journey was about to begin—a journey of devotion, knowledge and renunciation, leading her towards the grace of Lord Shiva.
