Prince Ari Singh Ji, the eldest son of Maharana Lakshman Singh of Chittor, had gone out on a hunting expedition. Chasing a wild boar, he and his companions galloped after it on their horses. Frightened, the boar ran into a millet field. That field was being guarded by a young girl. She came down from her watch platform, stepped out of the field, and stood in front of the horses. With great humility she said, “Prince, if you take your horses into my field, my crop will be destroyed. Please stop here; I will kill the boar and bring it to you.”
The prince thought that an empty-handed girl could hardly kill a boar. Out of curiosity, they waited. But they were greatly astonished to see that the girl uprooted a millet plant, sharpened it like a weapon, and fearlessly entered the field. In a short while, she killed the boar and brought it before the prince.
From there, the prince and his companions returned to their camp. While they were bathing, a stone came flying and struck the leg of one of their horses, breaking it. That stone had been thrown by the same farmer’s daughter from her watch platform to scare away birds. Seeing the condition of the prince’s horse, she ran from her field to the camp and began apologizing for having thrown the stone unintentionally. The prince said, “Seeing your strength, I am amazed. I regret that at this moment I have no reward worthy of giving you.”
The girl replied, “If you show kindness to your poor subjects, that itself is the greatest reward for me.”
Seeing the courage and strength of this fearless girl, Prince Ari Singh was deeply impressed. On inquiry, he learned that she was a Kshatriya maiden. Ari Singh himself went to her father and expressed his wish to marry her.
Thus, by the power of her valor, that girl one day became the Queen of Chittor. The famous Rana Hammir was born from her womb.
