In ancient times, Vishnu had obtained the Sudarshan Chakra from Lord Shiva. At one point, the demons became exceedingly powerful and began to oppress the world and disrupt righteousness. Subsequently, the gods, tormented by the powerful and valiant demons, approached Vishnu, the protector of the gods, and conveyed their distress.
The gods said, "O Lord, please have mercy on us. The demons are causing us immense suffering. Where should we go? What should we do? We are dependent on you, the giver of refuge."
Hearing the words of the sorrowful gods, Vishnu meditated on the lotus feet of Shiva and spoke:
Vishnu said, "O gods, I will worship Lord Shiva and accomplish your task, for these enemies are very powerful and must be conquered with great effort."
After Vishnu, who is all-powerful, spoke in this manner, all the gods, assuming that the wicked demons had already been defeated, returned to their respective abodes. Vishnu then began to worship Shiva, the lord of all gods, the omniscient, and the immutable, for the victory of the gods.
He went near Mount Kailash, created a sacrificial fire, and began performing penance there. Following the rituals of earthly worship, he happily offered prayers to Shiva with lotuses from Lake Manasarovar, using various mantras and hymns. Vishnu himself sat in meditation and did not waver.
He resolved that he would remain this way until Shiva was pleased. With this determination, Vishnu continued to worship Shiva. When Lord Shiva was not pleased with Vishnu, he began to contemplate. Pondering deeply, he continued to serve Lord Shiva in various ways, but the playful and wise Lord Shiva remained unpleased.
Afterward, astonished and filled with supreme devotion, Vishnu began lovingly reciting a thousand names of Shiva, offering one lotus at each name and worshipping Shambhu, the protector of the surrendered. At that time, to test Vishnu’s devotion, Shiva made one of the thousand lotuses disappear. Unaware of Shiva’s divine play, Vishnu began searching for the missing lotus.
Determined to fulfill his vow, Vishnu searched the entire earth for that lotus. When he could not find it, the pure-hearted Vishnu offered one of his own eyes instead. Seeing this, the ever-compassionate Shiva became pleased and appeared before Vishnu, saying:
Shiva said, "O Vishnu, I am pleased with you. Ask for the boon of your desire. I will grant you whatever you wish, for nothing is unattainable for me."
Hearing these words from Shiva, the delighted Vishnu, filled with great joy, folded his hands and said:
Vishnu said, "O Lord, you are the knower of all hearts. What should I say before you? Yet, by your command, I will speak. O Sadasiva, the demons have greatly tormented the entire world, causing us God's immense suffering. My weapon is not effective against them. What should I do and where should I go? There is no protector for me other than you. Therefore, O Maheshwara, I have come to your refuge."
Saying this, Vishnu, extremely tormented by the demons, bowed to the supreme Shiva and stood before him.
Hearing Vishnu's words, the god of gods, Maheshwara, granted him the supremely powerful Sudarshan Chakra.
Receiving it, Lord Vishnu quickly destroyed the mighty demons effortlessly with the chakra. Peace was thus restored in the world. The gods were happy, and Vishnu, exceedingly pleased with the beautiful Sudarshan Chakra, was also supremely happy.
