The reason for snakes' tongues being forked lies in their ancient tales. Vinata and Kadru were two sisters. Vinata was the mother of Garuda, while Kadru was considered the mother of serpents. But the elder sister Kadru, by habit, always deceived her younger sister in every task. One day, Kadru, the mother of serpents, trapped Vinata, the mother of Garuda, in a condition. (In visuals, we show that a white horse is flying in the sky with many snakes hanging on its tail, causing the entire white horse to appear black only from the tail. This condition was imposed by Vinata on Kadru that the entire horse is white. In order to win the bet, Kadru's serpent sons clung to the tail of that white horse so that the horse did not appear completely white and Vinata lost the bet.) Garuda asked his aunt, "What do you want for my mother's freedom?" Seeing an opportunity, Vinata said, "Then bring nectar from Chandraloka for my sons." Somehow, Garuda reached Chandraloka and stole the nectar from there... but the gods came to know about it.
All the gods tried one by one to stop Garuda, but Garuda defeated them all in battle. After that, all the defeated gods reached Narayana and told him everything. Angry with the nectar thief bird, Narayana, along with the gods, set out for the earthly realm. Meanwhile, as per the promise, Garuda brought his aunt and freed his mother from her bondage with nectar. To divide the nectar among his sons, Kadru placed the nectar vessel in a grassy place. But at that moment, Narayana arrived with the gods.
Before the discus of Narayana could punish Garuda, Narayana came to know that Garuda had stolen this nectar for his mother. After that, Narayana forgave Garuda and made him his vehicle. All the gods took away the pot of nectar... but a few drops of nectar fell on the grass. To lick that nectar, there was chaos among the serpents, and with the sharp edges of the grass, their tongues started getting cut. It is said that since then, all snakes have forked tongues...

Sarpom ke jeebh unhi ke kaaran beech se kat gaye jaaniye kaaran. Sarpom ke jeebh beech se kate hone ke peeche ka ek kaaran puranon mein milta hai. Vinata aur Kadru do sagi bahne thi. Vinata jahaan Garud ki maa thi wahiin Kadru sarpom ki maa maani jaati thi..Lekin badi behan Kadru aadat se majboor har kaary mein apni chhoti behan se chhal-kapat kiya karti thi.
Ek din sarpom ki maa Kadru ne Garud ki maa Vinata ko apne ek shart mein phasaakar daasi bana liya. (Visual mein hum dikhate hain ki aakash mein ek safed rang ka ghoda udta hua ja raha hai jiski poonch par bahut saare sarp latke hue hain jis kaaran vo poora safed ghoda sirf poonch se kaala dikh raha tha. Yahi shart Vinata ne Kadru se lagayi thi ki poora ghoda safed hai. Shart jeetne ke liye Kadru ke sarp putra us safed ghode ke poonch se lipat gaye the taaki ghoda poora safed na dikhaye aur Vinata shart haar jaaye) Garud ne apni mausi se poocha meri maa ki mukti ke liye aapko kya chahiye. Vinata ne avsar dekhkar kaha ki phir mere putron ke liye tum Chandralok se amrit churaakar le aao. Garud kisi tarah Chandralok pahuncha aur vahan se amrit chura liya...
Magar is baat ki jaankari devtaon ko lag gayi. Sabhi devtaon ne baari baari se Garud ko rokne ki koshish ki magar Garud ne sabhi ko yudh mein parast kar diya. Jiske baad sabhi haare hue devta Narayan ke paas pahunch aur unhe poora haal sunaya. Narayan us amrit chor pakshi par kupit hokar uska vad karne devtaon ke saath dhartilok ke liye nikal pade. Idhar vachan ke anusaar Garud ne mausi ko laakar amrit de diya aur apni maa ko unke bandhan se mukt karva liya. Apne putron ki beech amrit ke bantvaare ke liye Kadru ne amrit kalash ko ek ghaas waale sthaan par rakh diya. Magar usi waqt Narayan, devtaon ke saath aa gaye. Narayan ka chakra Garud ko dand de paata isse pahle Narayan ko ye pata chal gaya ki Garud ne ye amrit apni maa ke liye churaaya hai. Jiske baad Narayan ne Garud ko kshama kar use apna vaahan bana liya.
Sabhi devta amrit kalash utha le gaye.. Magar amrit ki kuch boonden ghaason par gir gayi. Usi amrit ko chatane ke liye sarpom mein bhagdaad machi aur ghaas ke teekshn dhaaron se unke jeebh kate chale gaye.. Kehte hain tabhi se sabhi sarpom ke jeebh kate hue hain..
