Sage Vyasa narrated the tale of the incarnation of Lord Sri Hari to King Janamejaya, saying, "O King! During the Dwapara Yuga, Earth was burdened with rulers like Jarasandha, Shishupala, the king of Kashi, Kansa, Rukmi, and Narakasura, who were all tyrants. Distressed by their sins, Bhudevi (Mother Earth), along with Brahma and Indra, and all the other gods, approached Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha and shared their anguish. Then, Lord Vishnu said to Brahma, 'O Devas! We are all under the authority of Devi Bhagavati. Therefore, we should seek refuge in the divine power of Bhagavati Maya.' Hearing this, the gods remembered Devi Bhagavati with faith and devotion. Upon their remembrance, Devi Bhagavati appeared before them, assured them by manifesting as Sri Krishna and Arjuna, and promised to alleviate the burden and suffering of the Earth.
After this, Vyasa narrated the story of the birth of Sri Krishna. The Supreme Soul Himself descended into the prison of Kansa to relieve the burden of the Earth and performed various divine acts. Despite being the Supreme Brahman, Sri Krishna had to endure many hardships on Earth. Shambhara Asura, the son of Rukmini, was kidnapped from his birthplace by the demon Shambhara Asura using his illusionary powers. Then, Sri Krishna praised Devi Mahamaya.
Pleased with His praise, Jagadamba (Mother of the Universe) appeared before Him and said that sixteen years later, His son, who had been taken by Shambhala Asura, would return to Him after killing the demon. Saying this, Devi disappeared. After the birth of Rukmini's son Pradyumna, Jambavati also sought a similar boon from Lord Sri Krishna for the birth of her son. Upon this, Sri Krishna performed penance to Lord Shankara, who pleased with His devotion, granted Him the boon of having ten sons from each of His queens. Later, Devi Parvati said, 'O Krishna! You will be the greatest householder in this world. After a hundred years, due to the curse of a Brahmin and Gandhari, your dynasty will perish, and you will depart to the divine realm along with your brother Balarama. You should not worry about the future, as there is no way to avoid inevitable events.' Saying this, Lord Shiva and all the other gods, including Parvati, disappeared.

Unke paap ke bojh se vyathit hokar Bhudevi, Brahma ji aur Indra sahit sabhi devta Bhagwan Vishnu ke paas Vaikunth gaye aur apni vyatha batayi. Tab Bhagwan Vishnu ne Brahma ji se kaha, 'Hey Devtao! Hum sab Devi Bhagavati ke adhin hain. Isliye humein Bhagavati Maya ki sharan mein jana chahiye.' Unke aisa kehne par devtaon ne Bhagavati ka shraddha-bhaktipurvak smaran kiya. Unke smaran karte hi Bhagavati ne unhein pratyaksh darshan dekar apni shakti se Shri Krishna aur Arjuna ke roop mein prithvi ka bojh aur duhkh door karne ka ashvasan diya.
Iske baad Vyasa ne Shri Krishna janm ki katha sunayi. Swyam sakshat Paramatma ne Prithvi ka bojh utarne ke liye Kansa ke karagar mein avatar liya aur vibhinn prakar ki leelayein ki. Parabrahma Paramatma hote hue bhi unhein Prithvilok par anek kast uthane pade. Rukmini ke putra Pradyumna ka Shambhara Asur ne apni maya se prasootigrih se hi haran kar liya tha. Tab Shri Krishna ne Bhagavati Mahamaya ka stavan kiya.
Unki stuti se prasann hokar Jagadamba ne unhein darshan diya aur kaha ki solah varsh baad tumhara beta Shambhara Asur ko mar kar tumhare paas svayam hi wapas aa jayega. Aisa kahkar Bhagavati antardhan ho gayin. Rukmini ke putra Pradyumna ke baad Jambavati ne bhi vaise hi putra ki prapti ke liye Bhagwan Shri Krishna se kaha. Is par Shri Krishna ne Bhagwan Shankar ki tapasya ki, jisse prasann hokar Bhagwan Shankar ne unhein pratyek rani se das putron ki prapti ka varadan diya. Uske baad Bhagavati Parvati ne kaha, 'Hey Krishna! Is sansar mein tum sarvashreshth grihasth honge. Sau varsh vyatit hone par ek vipra aur Gandhari ke shap ke karan tumhare kul ka nash ho jayega aur tum apne bhai Balaram ke saath yah sharir chhodkar divya lok ko prayan karenge. Tumhein bhavishya ke vishay mein kisi prakar ki chinta nahi karni chahiye; kyonki avashyambhavi ghatnaon ka koi bhi pratikar sambhav nahi hai.' Aisa kahkar Bhagwan Shiv aur sabhi anya devta, sahit Parvati, antardhan ho gaye.
