During the Treta Yuga, the atrocities of the formidable Ravana were escalating day by day. The wicked Ravana, after killing sages and ascetics, would even bathe in their blood. He had imprisoned several deities after stopping all worship and rituals. Even Shani Dev (Saturn) was under Ravana's captivity among the nine planets. As Ravana's tyranny increased, all the deities approached Lord Narayana and pleaded for liberation. In response, Lord Narayana revealed that he would soon incarnate as Lord Rama on Earth and eliminate Ravana. A fierce battle between Rama and Ravana was destined to take place, requiring a large army.
Brahma instructed all the deities to descend to Earth and give birth to children capable of fighting Ravana. Vali was born from Indra, Sugriva from Surya, Neel from Agni, and Nal from Vishwakarma. Many other beings were also born to assist in Rama's mission. Nal and Neel were among these divine children but were mischievous from childhood. These two monkey children troubled the sages by throwing their worship materials, including idols, into the river. Nal and Neel had already thrown several idols of Lord Narayana into the river.
The sages were distressed by their insolence, as these monkey children made it difficult for them to locate the submerged idols in the water. Due to the underwater idols, the thefts of Nal and Neel went unnoticed. However, one day, the mischievous duo fell into the hands of Sage Durvasa. The sage cursed them, stating that anything they threw into the river would never sink.
This curse proved to be beneficial in the future. When Lord Rama was building the bridge (Setu) to cross the ocean and reach Lanka to confront Ravana, Nal and Neel's curse came into play. Whatever stones they touched began to float on the water. Thus, the curse bestowed upon Nal and Neel turned into a boon during Lord Rama's time.
