Chhota Vikram
Chhota Vikram is the story of a twelve-to-fourteen-year-old prince of Ujjaini whose life takes an extraordinary turn when he encounters Baal Betal—the young Betal.
Unlike the traditional tales of the legendary Vikram and Betal, Chhota Vikram and Baal Betal is a completely new interpretation of the familiar world, imagined and created by Indian writer Shrikant Vishwakarma. The author reimagines Vikram not as the legendary adult king of popular folklore, but as a young prince who must find his own courage, intelligence and strength in a kingdom torn apart by war.
After a brutal battle between the forces of King Gandharvasen of Ujjaini and the invading Shak ruler, Gandharvasen is killed in battle. Ujjaini falls into the hands of the barbaric and ruthless Shak king.
Vikram is still only a child.
He and his brothers and sisters are confined within the Shivalaya Palace, forbidden from leaving its walls. The palace has become both their home and their prison. Outside, Ujjaini is under the control of a foreign ruler, and its people live in fear.
But Vikram refuses to accept his fate.
Young, fearless and remarkably resourceful, he begins to devise a plan to escape the palace. Once outside, he discovers the suffering of his people and secretly begins gathering a band of young warriors. His goal is far greater than simply surviving. He must protect the people of Ujjaini, defeat the Shak ruler and reclaim the kingdom and honour his family has lost.
But the Shak king soon learns that a mysterious young prince is building a force against him.
Fearing that Vikram could become a threat to his rule, the Shak launches an attack on Shivalaya Palace with the intention of destroying Vikram and his family.
Yet the palace possesses a secret.
Anyone who attempts to attack Shivalaya Palace will meet a mysterious and deadly fate.
The secret behind the palace's protection lies in nine divine gemstones, ancient treasures possessing extraordinary powers. For generations, these sacred jewels have protected Shivalaya Palace from its enemies.
Then, suddenly, everything changes.
Baal Betal steals the nine divine gemstones.
Without the protection of the jewels, Shivalaya Palace is vulnerable. To recover them, young Vikram must venture beyond the safety of his kingdom and seek out the mysterious Baal Betal.
But who—or what—is Baal Betal?
Why did he steal the nine divine gemstones?
And what secret connects the young prince, the ancient palace and the mysterious Betal?
These questions lie at the heart of Chhota Vikram and Baal Betal, the fantasy novel conceived and written by Shrikant Vishwakarma, a writer from Bokaro, Jharkhand, India.
Vishwakarma created the concept of Chhota Vikram and Baal Betal several years ago, imagining a younger Vikram and a younger Betal in a story that stands apart from the traditional Vikram-Betal legends. The book was first published on Amazon, where it introduced readers to this new world of adventure, mystery, mythology and fantasy.
The novel later attracted interest from the United States, leading to an opportunity for an international publishing journey. The English edition is currently undergoing editorial work in the United States and is expected to be released in the coming months.
At the centre of the novel is a very different Vikram—a boy of twelve to fourteen who is brave, intelligent and unwilling to surrender to fear. He is not yet the legendary king known from later stories. He is a young prince who must earn his place through courage, strategy and sacrifice.
And alongside him stands Baal Betal—the mysterious young spirit whose arrival changes everything.
Their encounter sets Vikram on a journey into a world of hidden secrets, ancient powers, danger and adventure, where every answer seems to lead to another mystery.
Chhota Vikram and Baal Betal is ultimately a story about a young prince discovering his courage before he becomes a king, and about a mysterious companion whose true purpose may be far more important than it first appears.
The original novel is available on Amazon, while a newly edited and enhanced edition is currently being prepared for release.
