Long ago, there used to be an Apsara named Adrika. Adrika was so playful by nature that her feet never stayed in one place; therefore, she always used to come out of the Apsara realm and enter the Earthly realm. Adrika's parents always advised her not to go to the Earthly realm repeatedly, as one day she might fall into great trouble because of humans. However, Adrika never listened to her parents. She always kept going to the Earthly realm and, due to her playful actions, did some unpredictable things.
Adrika loved water sports, especially swimming. Whenever she came to the Earthly realm, she indulged in water sports to her heart's content. One day, while Adrika was enjoying a water excursion in the Yamuna River, she was seen by a sage performing evening prayers in the river. Amid her play, Adrika went to the sage and disrupted his worship. As a result, the sage cursed Adrika to become a fish in the same water.
Immediately upon receiving the sage's curse, Adrika transformed into a mermaid. Now, as a mermaid, Adrika could neither become a young woman again nor return to her realm. The words of her parents, which she had ignored before, now started haunting her. However, it was too late. Due to the sage's curse, she had become a fish.

Adrika, having made one mistake, didn't want to make another. She abandoned all efforts to leave the river because, as a fish, if she left the water, she would die. The mermaid accepted her fish life and started living in the river. After a long time, King Uparichara came to the area for hunting. King Uparichara was a king with mystical powers. When his eyes fell on the fish, he learned the entire story related to the fish's curse.
Now, the fish began to appear as the Apsara Adrika in front of King Uparichara. The king started visiting the fish, now turned Apsara, every day. Eventually, with the swift union of King Uparichara, a mermaid and a merman were born. However, both siblings were in human form. When Matsyagandha, the complete young woman, came into existence, Parashara Muni's attention was drawn towards her. He became attached to her, and from their union, Vyasa Muni was born, who later became the author of the Puranas and the Mahabharata.
Matsyagandha continued to be a young woman and was known as Devi Satyavati. Later, she got married to the Kuru king Maharaja Shantanu.

Ab mastya-kanya bani Adrika na to phir se yuvati ban sakti thi aur na hi kabhi apne lok vaapas ja sakti thi. Adrika ko baar-baar uske mata-pita ki kahi baatein yaad aane lagi, jo use Dhartilok jaane se mana karte the. Lekin ab kuch nahi ho sakta tha. Rishi ke shraap ke karan vo ab machhli ban chuki thi. Adrika ek bhool to kar chuki thi ab vo doosri bhool nahi karna chahti thi.
Usne us nadi se baahar nikalne ke apne saare prayas chhod diye kyun ki machhli ban chuki Adrika agar jal se bahar nikalti to vo mar jaati. Us matasya-kanya ne apne machhli jeevan ko svikar kar liya aur usi din se uss tarah rahne lagi. Bahut samay ke baad us nadi ke kshetra par Raja Uparichar shikaar ke liye aaye. Uparichar ek siddhi praapt raja the. Jab unki nazar us machhli par padi to unhein us machhli ke shraap se judi saari kahani pata chal gayi. Raja Uparichar ko ab us machhli mein Apsara Adrika dikhne lagi.
